STORY PITCH This is a scene from the (hopefully) coming movie 'Waking Up'. It is about Ben, who froze himself down in 2010, in the hope that humanity once might be able to thaw him up and cure his disease. And this is exactly what happens. In the year 2110, the world has gone through massive changes towards the positive. Both technology and human values has developed into a whole new world, positive in all aspects for humanity. One of the aspects is that money and property is gone, and people do things for other reasons than hoarding wealth. Waking Up is about Ben's experiences in this world and the difficulties he faces in waking up to this new reality. In the scene, Ben is walking in the woods with his newly acquainted guide, Aweena. He has only been awake for a few days, after several weeks of curing and restituting his body while he was asleep. He is a bit confused, and can't really understand what has happened. He feels somewhat attracted to this new world and to Aweena, but at the same time he has trouble believing it is real. The movie will be an 'open source' movie where others can contribute. If you don't know anything about Krishnan, start off by watching this CNN Heroes special: vimeo.com I really hope nobody gets the wrong impression from this video - I'm not bashing what they do at all. It was probably the most unique experience I've had in all my experiences with NGOs and social projects so far. It was clear that Krishnan understands the need of exposure for funding purposes, but he also is extremely protective of his schedule and of the people he works with. It must be that diligence and professionalism that got him the job in the Swiss 5-star hotel that he decided not to take. I didn't get any more of an experience of Akshaya than you can at home...literally 10 of the 30 minutes I was with him was spent in front of a TV watching Keifer Sutherland and Anderson Cooper (or one of those guys) introduce him at the CNN Heroes awards show, followed by the video in the link above. Any questions I asked, he immediately referred me to their website and graciously informed me that I can get any details imaginable about their work there. Oh - and the cheesy text animations? On June 23rd, 2010 a line of nasty storms rolled through Chicago in the early evening hours. I stayed late at the office that night to work on some things and to avoid the rush hour chaos that was going on. Once I returned home I wasn't really paying attention to what was happening outside until my sisters boyfriend asked me if I was watching the lightning. I took a quick look out my window and saw some quick hits of lightning and ran back to my room to grab my camera and tripod. I was standing out there randomly hitting the record button and hoping I would catch some of the strikes. About 15 minutes in nothing was happening during my current recording so I reached to stop it and start a new one. At the moment I touched the camera three of the tallest buildings in Chicago were struck by lightning at the same time. Willis Tower (Tallest), Trump International Hotel and Tower (2nd Tallest) and the John Hancock Building(4th tallest). In this video, I demonstrate three simple UI tweaks to iOS that really improve functionality and use. 1. Wi-Fi Selection. Instead of a alert-style dialog prompting you to choose a network (you must decide what to do at that moment before moving on), a Wi-Fi banner appears, prompting you that there are available networks to connect to. Simply tap the banner to go to settings, or swipe down to easily connect to a network, WITHOUT EXITING your app. This same kind of notification style can be put to use for other alerts, such as low battery. Ultimately, the main goal of this tweak is to eliminate the modal, interrupting alert all together for iOS system functions (battery, WiFi, SIM card, etc). 2. Popovers. A simple iPad UI design that now appears on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Instead of context menus taking you away from your current window, all actions can now be performed within the popover.
